Gunite Pool Design and the Space Around the Water

A gunite pool is shaped in place, which gives the design unusual freedom. That freedom is most valuable when it serves the space around the water, not just the outline of the pool. Thinking about the surrounding deck, structures and circulation while shaping the shell keeps a custom https://audiomack.com/waveoutdoorspools pool from becoming a custom problem.

A custom outline can follow the yard

Because the shell is formed on site, the outline can respond to property lines, slopes, trees and existing patios. A curve can wrap around a seating area, a straight edge can align with the house and a widened shallow zone can sit where gathering naturally happens. The design can begin with how the yard works and then shape the pool to suit it.

Shape the water and the deck together

Every edge of the pool creates an edge of deck. A complex outline can leave narrow strips or awkward wedges that are hard to use. Drawing the deck alongside the shell helps ensure that curves create usable spaces and that circulation around the pool stays clear.

Integrate features into the shell

Gunite construction allows features to be built into the pool itself, such as benches, broad entry steps and integrated spas. Placing those features where they relate to the deck, for example a bench near a shaded seating area or a spa near the house, strengthens the connection between water and surroundings. Wave Outdoors Pools builds gunite and concrete pools and designs and builds water features including integrated spas, so these elements can be planned as part of one layout.

Consider level changes

A shell shaped in place can work with sloped sites, perhaps sitting partly into a hillside or with a raised edge on the low side. Those level changes affect how the deck, steps and retaining walls connect. Designing them together prevents awkward transitions.

Leave room for safety and equipment

Custom shapes still need practical space around them. Fence lines, gates and cover systems must fit the outline, and equipment needs a location close enough for practical plumbing. A dramatic shape that leaves no room for these elements will create compromises later.

Avoid shape for its own sake

Freedom invites complexity, but complexity is not always better. An outline with many curves may look striking on paper while making the deck harder to furnish and the pool harder to cover. A simpler shape, refined to fit the yard, often serves daily use better.

Use the freedom where it counts

The real advantage of gunite is the ability to put features, depths and edges exactly where they serve the household. Using that freedom to strengthen the relationship between the pool and the space around it, rather than simply to create an unusual outline, tends to produce a pool that feels both custom and comfortable.
